English language requirements
If English is not your first language you will need to submit evidence of a good command of English before starting your degree programme. We accept the IELTS (International English Language Testing System – academic version) and TOEFL IBT test along with a number of other English language tests. Please note we do not accept TOEFL Institutional Testing Programme (ITP). We recognise these language tests providing they were taken no more than two years before the intended start of your degree or pre-sessional English programme. If you wish to defer your entry to the University, we may ask you to re-take a recognised language test if your original offer was based on a test which will be more than two years old at the point of registration.
Our English language requirements table provides details of IELTS and TOEFL required results for all our postgraduate programmes.
If you have undertaken a full degree programme in the UK, Anglophone Canada, USA, Australia or New Zealand, the English language requirements may be waived provided that your degree was completed no more than two years before the start of your programme. Other local English language qualifications may also be acceptable; please contact the International Office for clarification.
All certificates submitted as evidence of English language competence will be verified with the relevant certificate issuing body.
English programmes at INTO University of Exeter
If the results of your English test show you need to improve your English before commencing your studies you can attend a pre-sessional preparation course at the INTO University of Exeter Centre. Information as to whether pre-sessional English preparation is required or recommended will be confirmed in your offer letter and our pre-sessional English language programmes page provides details as to whether you will need to take a pre-sessional English programme based on your achieved and required score.
If you do not meet the pre-sessional entry requirements or want to have longer to understand and learn new skills, the Centre also offers an English for postgraduate studies course which includes a greater focus on study skills alongside language tuition. The Graduate Diploma offered by the Centre, can also be used as an academic or English language ‘top-up’ prior to postgraduate study in the relevant field.
