This programme brings together the latest developments in materials science and their application into new technology, providing you with specialist knowledge and skills which will enhance your engineering career.

It focuses on the theory and computational simulation of material structures for application into automotive, aerospace, technology and energy sectors. You will gain a strong understanding of the properties and behaviours of different substances, from raw materials to finished products, identifying their strengths and limitations, enabling you to find solutions to complex contemporary problems.

Our particular research strengths are drawn into the masters programme, in areas including functional materials (those with extra functionality such as electro-magnetic screening, self-sensing and active materials, and materials with negative thermal expansion and Poisson’s ratios), polymers, composites and bio-materials.

Programme structure

This programme is modular and flexible, carrying 180 credits in total and offering flexibility in choice of modules studied.

MSc Materials Engineering consists of eight core engineering modules totalling 165 credits, which includes the 60-credit Engineering MSc project, and one 15-credit option module.

The programme begins in September each year and the taught elements are concluded by May. The Engineering MSc project, under the personal supervision of a research expert in the chosen area, continues until September.

The precise modules available to you in future years may vary depending on staff availability and research interests, new topics of study, timetabling and student demand.

Structure

To complete an MSc 180 credits need to be completed, of which there are 8 x 15-credit taught modules and an additional 60-credit Project.

Each 15-credit module is delivered in an intensive 2-3 week block at the University of Exeter. This allows part-time students in full-time employment to complete their programme in short, concentrated blocks.

Modules are taught once per year, and precise dates of each module will be made available. It is not possible to delay modules and due to the intensive programme, students must attend all sessions.

All modules will be taught to both full and part-time students.

Pricing for the part-time programmes will be scaled with the full time MSc.

4-year programme = ¼ full-time price per year

2-year programme = ½ full-time price per year

Learning and teaching

Teaching and assessment

The programme is delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, industrial presentations, case studies, industry visits, computer simulations, project work and a dissertation.

The programme will have particular value in developing transferable skills development including management skills, communication skills, computational techniques, data handling and analysis, problem solving, decision making and research methodology. Many of these skills will be addressed within an industrial and commercial context.

You will be allocated a Personal Tutor who is available for advice and support throughout your studies, along with support and mentoring from graduates who are now placed in industry. There is also a Postgraduate Tutor available to help with further guidance and advice.

A research- and practice-led culture

We believe every student benefits from being taught by experts active in research and practice. You will discuss the very latest ideas, research discoveries and new technologies in seminars and in the field and you will become actively involved in a research project yourself. All our academic staff are active in internationally-recognised scientific research across a wide range of topics. You will also be taught by leading industry practitioners.

There is considerable demand in the workplace for graduates with knowledge in both a specialist technology area and in management, particularly in the modern tools and techniques to support the management of a dynamically changing engineering business.

Recent graduates have taken employment in a variety of sectors, including both large companies and small and medium sized enterprises.

A good honours degree from a recognised university. We do consider all applications where there is evidence of exceptional performance in modules relevant to the programme of study, significant relevant work experience or professional qualifications

Overall score 6.5. No less than 6.0 in any section.

TOEFL IBT*

Overall score 90 with minimum scores of 21 for writing, 21 for listening, 22 for reading and 23 for speaking.

Pearson Test of English (Academic)

58 with no less than 55 in all communicative skills.

Cambridge English: Advanced & Proficiency

Overall score 176. No less than 169 in any section.

Pre-sessional English

Tuition fees per year 2017/18
