Career Zone approach to teaching and learning

Inclusivity and accessibility are central to our approach to teaching and education in the Career Zone. We have adopted a ‘Universal Design for Learning’ method, in which we aim to remove as many barriers as we can for accessing our workshops and sessions. The nature of our workshops mean we don’t have access to Individual Learning Plans, and we know that not all students requiring adjustments will have an ILP, so upon registering for some workshops, you will be asked if you have any reasonable adjustments we haven’t already noted below, we will always do our best to accommodate requests.

What does this look like in practice?

  • For in-person sessions, you will be able to find accessibility information about rooms from the event listing on Handshake.
  • Slides will be shared in advance.
  • We try to make sure we are using accessible text and backgrounds.
  • We think group work can be a very powerful learning tool, but appreciate this isn’t the right approach for everyone, and we work to include alternative ways of engaging with particular tasks and activities.
  • If you need to fidget, move around or leave the room for a moment, that’s completely fine. This is your space.

We endeavour to create an inclusive environment in all of our workshops, we encourage participants to share from their experience (where they feel able to), to meet other students and to use the space in a way that works for them. As facilitators, we’re always learning and looking for ways to ensure our teaching is inclusive and accessible for all. If you have any suggestions for things we can look at, please do let us know!
