Pride Month 2023

Pride Month 2023

Pride Month, celebrated in June, holds great significance for the University of Exeter and the LGBTQ+ community. It is a time of acceptance, equality, and honouring the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals. This year the Students' Guild are hosting a range of activities happening between 05 - 09 June including the Pride Campus March on Friday 09 June.

The Pride March serve as more than just a celebration of sexual orientation and gender identity. Is also acts as a demonstration, advocating for legal rights such as same-sex marriage and the complete protection of individuals from harmful conversion therapy, which has gained recent attention in the news.

Beyond the march, Pride Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ history and educate the wider public on LGBTQ+ issues. It serves as a reminder that Pride is not only a celebration but also an ongoing protest. The first Pride event in June 1970 commemorated the anniversary of the Stonewall Inn uprising, marking a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history.

The meaning of Pride Month remains the same: acknowledging progress in LGBTQ+ inclusion while recognising that there is still work to be done. Initially called "gay Pride Month," it has evolved to encompass and embrace the entire LGBTQ+ community, celebrating the diverse identities within it. The University of Exeter proudly joins in the celebration and supports the continued efforts for a more inclusive and equitable society.

The Students' Guild have loads of events and resources happening for Pride Month this year.
