Project partners

This project is a collaboration between the University of Exeter, local communities, and a series of partners in the heritage sector:

British Museum 

The British Museum is a long-standing partner of the annual Ipplepen excavation, having supplied staff and expert guidance on the conservation of metal objects.

Calstock Parish Council 

Calstock Parish Council own some of the land beneath which the site of Calstock Roman fort lay. We will be working with the Parish Council to record buried archaeology in areas threatened by the continued use of the parish burial ground.

Devon County Council Historic Environment Service

The DCCHES will be supporting the Understanding Landscapes project in developing and delivering its community heritage events in Bere Ferrers and Ipplepen. As the body responsible for the County’s heritage, Devon County Council Historic Environment Service is a long-standing partner of the annual Ipplepen excavation.

National Trust 

We will be working with the National Trust at Cotehele, Cornwall, to provide new information about the estate’s buried archaeology in order to inform its management and presentation to the public.

Plymouth City Museum

Plymouth City Museum is the recipient museum for the finds and archives from our work in Bere Ferrers. In the future it will host the Understanding Landscapes touring exhibition.

Portable Antiquities Scheme

The PAS were instrumental in identifying the archaeological site at Ipplepen and have worked closely with the University during its excavation.

Royal Cornwall Museum 

The Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro is the recipient museum for the finds and archives from our past and present work in Calstock. In the future it will host the Understanding Landscapes touring exhibition.

Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty 

The project team have worked with the Tamar Valley AONB on components of previous community-led heritage projects on both sides of the River Tamar. This relationship will continue and the AONB will be providing event space for new Understanding Landscapes events.

Torquay Museum

Torquay Museum is the recipient museum for the finds and archive from the Ipplepen excavations. We will contribute to its forthcoming exhibition about Roman life west of Exeter and, in the future, it will host the Understanding Landscapes touring exhibition.
