Our work in schools

A key component of the Understanding Landscapes project is to bring heritage learning opportunities to local schools and to provide a lasting legacy through the provision of Local Heritage Learning Resource Packs to these schools and those within a broader area.

Providing specialist heritage education will give pupils access to artefacts, resources and experiences not normally available in school. The archaeology and heritage sessions linked directly to their local area will inspire children, their parents and teachers to take a continued interest in heritage. It will raise their awareness that traces of the past are evident in the landscape in which they live, and inspire a life-long interest in the subject.

The heritage learning opportunities will be based around the provision of hands-on activities related to archaeology and local heritage, and could include work with archaeological artefacts, maps, and photographs, as well as test-pit digging within the school grounds.

Through hands on experiences, and engaging activities, children will begin to understand how the world around them has been shaped by events throughout history, helping to give them a sense of place and identity.
