Parking information for new starters

Welcome to the University of Exeter!  Here you will find a summary of information which will explain your options for commuting to work and parking.

The University of Exeter has a very "green" mindset when it come to travel and commuting, and significant investment is made into sustainable travel options.  More information on the sustainable travel options available can be found on our Sustainable Travel webpages.

There is very limited parking available, we have around 1600 parking spaces on Streatham campus (bearing in mind we have over 7500 staff!) and these are mainly located in car parks A, B and D, with the rest spread around the campus.  On St Luke's campus we have one main car park, accessible from Magdalen Road, with some smaller parking areas around the campus.

The locations of all our parking areas can be found on the campus maps page.

Parking on campus

Parking on both Exeter campuses is tightly controlled through a permit system, and permit holders can park in any marked bay on campus except car park C, which is only for visitors.

We use a strict set of eligibility criteria to determine who should have a permit, and we encourage colleagues where possible to use alternative means of transport other than private car.  Our eligibility criteria broadly speaking is determined by where you live, the availability of public transport to you, any caring responsibilites you have, and your working hours.  Essentially, if you have the option of commuting on public transport, and your journey would take 45 minutes or less with one change, then you will not be eligible for a permit.  This means that living within the city in postcodes EX1, EX2 or EX4, would mean you would not get a parking permit.  If you are deemed ineligible (the parking team can advise if you are unsure), then there some exceptions for carers or people working unsociable hours - details can be found on our main pages.

If you are eligible then you need to apply through the online portal, and provide proof of address for your permit to be processed.  There are two different types of permit you can have, a pay as you go called an "Authority to Park", or an Annual Permit where the payments come direct from your salary after tax.  Further information can be found on the permits pages, and there is a handy guide for you to decide which permit is best for you.

Once you have applied for your permit, you are advised to put a note in your windscreen saying you have applied and when you applied, until we can get your permit posted out to you.

If you have any queries or concerns for your first day, please don't worry - if you put a note in your window saying it is your first day and then contact the parking team when you can, you will not receive a fine.

Adherence to the parking regulations are monitored and enforced by a team of parking attendants, and fines will be issued if people are found to be breaching the rules.
