Ordinance 23

23 The Education Board and Postgraduate Research Board
23.1.1 There shall be an Education Board headed by the Dean for Taught Students, and Postgraduate Research Board headed by the Dean of Postgraduate Research, for each of which there shall be a Board with powers as set out in Ordinance 26.
23.1.2

The Dean for Taught Students shall be the convener and Chair of the Education Board and will co-Chair with the Director of Teaching Excellence and Enhancement. The Dean of Postgraduate Research shall be the convener and Chair of the Postgraduate Research Board. The Dean for Taught Students and Dean of Postgraduate Research shall perform such other duties as may from time to time be determined by the Senate and the Council.

23.2.1

The Education Board and Postgraduate Research Board may recruit Associate Deans to undertake such duties as may be delegated by the Dean for Taught Students or Dean of Postgraduate Research.

23.2.2

The Dean for Taught Students, Dean of Postgraduate Research and Associate Deans shall be appointed by the Council on the recommendation of the Senate. The Vice-Chancellor shall, following an open and transparent process, which may include internal and external advertisement and interview, make a nomination to Senate for onward transmission to Council.

23.2.3

The Dean for Taught Students and Dean of Postgraduate Research and Associate Deans shall be appointed for a term of office to be approved by Council, which shall normally be or a minimum term of three years and not more than five years. This period of office shall be renewable for further terms, subject to the recommendation of Senate and approval by Council.

23.2.4 If the Office of Dean or Associate Dean should fall empty before the expiry of the agreed period of tenure, a locum appointment may be made by the Vice Chancellor until the procedures referred to in paragraph 23.2 can be operated.
23.3 The Education Board shall consist of:
  (a) The Dean for Taught Students.
  (b) Director of Teaching Excellence and Enhancement.
  (c) The Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor from each Faculty.
  (d) Four members from each Faculty nominated by its Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education, to include the Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education (or equivalent), the Senior Education Business Partner and three other academic members to represent as far as possible, non-Streatham provision, undergraduate programmes, post graduate programmes, language and lab based subjects. The Associate Dean for Education (where relevant) should be included within this.
  (e) Students’ Guild Vice President for Education and Students’ Union President Exeter (the Falmouth and Exeter Students' Union) to represent as far as possible the views of the student body of the University and to provide knowledge and expertise of Guild/ the Falmouth and Exeter Students' Union’s priorities and current student initiatives.
  (f) Other members co-opted as appropriate to provide knowledge and expertise from their respective directorate, such that the total membership of the Board shall not exceed thirty.
  (g) Three members of the Senate in order to provide a cross-institution perspective and to provide assurance to Senate of appropriate governance and conduct in relation to academic governance, quality and rigour, and that matters delegated by the Senate are dealt with accordingly.
23.4  The Postgraduate Research Board shall consist of:
  (a) The Dean of Postgraduate Research.
  (b) The Assistant Director (Research Environment & Doctoral College).
  (c) The Director of Postgraduate Research from each Faculty.
  (d) The PS Partners for Research, Doctoral College and Innovation, Impact and Business from each Faculty.
  (e) a representative of the Students' Guild and a representative of the Falmouth and Exeter Students' Union’s to represent as far as possible the views of the student body of the University and to provide knowledge and expertise of Guild/ the Falmouth and Exeter Students' Union’s priorities and current student initiatives.
  (f) Other members co-opted as appropriate to provide knowledge and expertise from their respective directorate, such that the total membership of the Board shall not exceed thirty-four. 
  (g) three members of Senate in order to provide a cross-institution perspective and to provide assurance to Senate of appropriate governance and conduct in relation to academic governance, quality and rigour, and that matters delegated by the Senate are dealt with accordingly.
23.5 The Education shall exercise its powers as defined in Ordinance 26 in respect of all taught programmes of study leading to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, diplomas, certificates and other awards delivered by a Faculty or other academic unit of the University.
23.6 The Postgraduate Research Board shall exercise its powers as defined in Ordinance 26 in respect of all programmes of research delivered by a Faculty or other academic unit of the University, and in respect of Higher Doctorates.
