Frequently Asked Questions
Coursework Submission
First, find your submission point in ELE 2. You can do this through the My Assessments block in the Dashboard, or the Assessment Quick Links block in the relevant course page. Click the > or + icon beside the assessment, then More details.... Some formative assessments may not show in these blocks (depending on the assessment type).
You can also find your submission point within the relevant course page. It will appear as a pink square icon and an assessment title, surrounded by a grey box. Click into this.
Within the submission point, you’ll see the assessment’s deadlines, information on your submission status, and any rubrics or marking guides that will be used to mark your work. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Upload your submission.
After clicking Upload your submission, you’ll be taken to a page where you can enter some text. It’s helpful for your markers to make your link ‘clickable’. To do this, copy and paste your link into the text box, then highlight the link and click the chain button in the text editor. Paste your link again, tick Open in new window, and click Create link. Agree to the terms and submit.

After clicking Upload your submission, you’ll be taken to a page where you can upload your scans, agree to the terms, and submit.
In addition to your scans, you may be required to submit a PDF or Microsoft Word document, containing a minimum of 20 typed words. This is necessary if your assessors plan to use a specific set of marking tools (via Turnitin). Your module lead will let you know if you need to do this.
Yes. Once you’ve submitted your assessment, the Upload your submission option will change to Edit your submission. Usually, you’ll be able to upload a new version if you’re still within the deadline.
If your markers are using a rubric or marking guide, you’ll find it at the relevant submission point in ELE 2 – the same page that you need to submit your assessment to.
If you see a section titled Marking guide around halfway down the page, you can view the attached rubric or marking guide by clicking the text beneath the title.
If you see View the Rubric used for marking below the Your submission status section, you can view the attached rubric or marking guide by clicking this text.
In ELE 2, you can add one week (7 days, including weekends) self-certified extension to a summative assessment deadline, where applicable, without needing to submit evidence. You can do this once per assessment, and four times per academic year. Find the Assessment Quick Links block in the relevant course page. Click the + icon beside the assessment. Then, click the + icon beside Mitigation followed by Select a one week extension. There are some assessment types that do not allow self-certification, such as group work and quizzes. You can check with your Info Point if you’re unsure.
If you’ve run out of self-certified extensions, or need an extension of longer than one week, you’ll need to submit an evidence-based mitigation request. Follow the instructions above, but instead of clicking Select a one week extension, click Apply for mitigation. This will link to guidance on the mitigation process.
The University has a policy for the provision of timely feedback and dates for feedback release are determined by the deadlines in the TQA. You can see when your feedback is due for each assignment through the ‘My Assessments’ block in the ELE2 Dashboard or the ‘Assessment Quick Links’ block in the relevant course page. Click the ‘>’ or ‘+’ icon beside the relevant assessment. When your feedback is released via ELE2 you will receive a notification to your university email address.
You’ll find your feedback at the relevant submission point in ELE 2 – the same page that you submitted your assessment to.
Your markers now have more options for providing high quality feedback, so you may find that the type of feedback you receive differs between assessments.
Near the top of the page, you may see General feedback. This will apply to everyone who has submitted the assessment. Please note that this may not be provided.
Under the Your submission status section, you’ll see your Provisional grade. This may be different from the final grade that will later be available in the Student Record System.
You’ll receive personalised feedback in one of two ways:
- If you’ve been left standard personalised feedback, you’ll see it under the Feedback section. You may see written feedback beside Feedback comment. Your markers may also have uploaded Feedback files.
- If you’ve been left Turnitin (Feedback Studio) personalised feedback, you’ll see it under the Your submission status section. Click the blue pencil icon beside Submission file to view your feedback in a new window. This video shows you how to interpret this.
No. Your feedback will remain accessible to you on ELE 2 for the duration of your studies at the University.
Late Submission of Coursework
Your marked grade will be reduced by 5 percent (%) of the total percentage available for the assessment (i.e. 100%), if your coursework has reached (or is above) the standard of the module pass mark.
For example, if you had 65% out of a possible 100%, and submitted up to 59 minutes and 59 seconds late, you would receive a 5% penalty, and receive 60%.
If your assessment was judged to be a pass based on the quality of work but in the 40-44 (UG) or 50-54 (PGT) boundary, your marked grade will be reduced to the minimum pass mark e.g. 40% for UG, 50% for PGT.
Information on the individual pass mark for modules is available here:
http://as.exeter.ac.uk/academic-policy-standards/tqa-manual/aph/marking/#PassMark
Please see the table of late penalties: 2.11.3 for more information:
http://as.exeter.ac.uk/academic-policy-standards/tqa-manual/aph/settingandsubmission/#late
Assessments judged to be under the pass mark for the module will not receive the 5% penalty (see FAQ 9 for more information).
Your work will be capped at the pass mark for the assessment (40% for UG, 50% for PGT), unless an application for mitigation has been approved.
For more information on late penalties, please see http://as.exeter.ac.uk/academic-policy- standards/tqa-manual/aph/settingandsubmission/#late
First submissions submitted later than 24 hours after the deadline will receive a mark of zero.
4. I have had an extension agreed to my coursework submission deadline, does the same penalty apply?
Yes – you would receive the exact same penalty as those students submitting at the original deadline time (FAQ 1).
Yes – you would receive the exact same penalty as those students submitting at the original deadline time (FAQ 1).
No – if a referred piece of work is submitted late you will automatically be capped at a zero as soon as the deadline has passed, unless mitigation has been approved.
For more information on Mitigation, please see Chapter 10 - Mitigation: Deadline extensions and deferrals.
This will be advised to you locally. If you are unsure of this, please speak to your Info Point / Hub: https://www.exeter.ac.uk/students/infopoints/
In all cases, the marks released to you in early February (provisional marks) and June (final marks) will show your capped mark.
Please see the TQA guidance on Late Submission of Coursework which can be found here: http://as.exeter.ac.uk/academic-policy-standards/tqa-manual/aph/settingandsubmission/#late.
This would unfairly penalise students who submit failed work within the hour after the deadline, compared to those who submit failed work after this time.
Example: a student submitting work at 58 minutes past the deadline gets 37%. If the 5% penalty were to be applied, they would receive 32%, but if they submitted at 62 minutes past the deadline, they would receive 37%. This is because late submission of coursework more than one hour after a submission deadline and up to 24 hours beyond a submission deadline must receive a mark capped at the module pass mark (unless an application for mitigation is
