Cornwall Disability Network

Cornwall Disability Network

The Cornwall Disability Network aims to provide a support system for staff and students at the University of Exeter’s Penryn campus, to share experiences within a secure and confidential environment and to seek guidance and support regarding disability issues. We also aim to raise awareness of issues affecting those with disability and carers at the Penryn campus, and to help promote a culture that supports disabled and caring staff and students through all areas of campus life.

We use “disability” as an umbrella term to include physical disability, mental illness, chronic illness, sensory impairment, and neurodiversity. We understand not everyone who experiences these things would call themselves disabled and you do not have to identify as disabled to be included in the Network.

"Carers" are those who provide life sustaining care to those with disability, either on a part or full time basis.

The Disability Network is for all staff and students at the university under the broad umbrella of ‘disability’ who want to connect with others, share experiences, or promote change. The Cornwall campus is unique from other Exwter campuses in that it is shared with Falmouth University. In response, the Cornwall Disability Network has been set up in partnership with both Universities, and separate from the Streatham based Disability Network, to best be able to provide support for the disabled and/or caring students and staff of the Cornwall campuses.

Allies who are interested in supporting the aims of the Network are always welcome to join or attend meetings. Allies are included in all meetings and events as it also allows people to attend as allies if they are concerned about disclosure.

The mission of the Network is two-fold:

  1. to provide support and guidance for incoming and current student and staff who identify as disabled or as Carers
  2. to represent the interests of the Networks members and other disabled and caring staff and students at various levels across the Cornwall campuses

We run monthly meetings where Co-chairs and all members are invited to attend. At these meetings we discuss on-going work, and events that may be of interest to members. It is also a time to socialise with fellow Network members.

The Network has a designated Teams channel. Every fortnight the Co-Chairs post a round-up of the on-going projects, and upcoming opportunities.

The Network links with Falmouth and Exeter Student Unions, FXPlus, and UNiversity specific Equality and Diversity Initiatives.

No.

We understand disclosing a disability or illness at work can be anxiety-provoking, so you never need to disclose any issues to take part. You are also welcome to tell colleagues you attend meetings as an ally, or to discuss your issues in meetings in the third person. We also have an anonymous form which you can use at any time to share experiences or suggest agenda items.

How do I join?

To join email cornwalldisabilitynetwork@exeter.ac.uk and ask to join the mailing list and Teams channel.
