'With Proficiency in Law' pathway

The 'With proficiency' pathway is available to any non-law students wishing to take the required modules. Students can take one or more of the modules. However, to obtain the 'With proficiency' award on their degree, students need to complete 60 credits across these modules.

Level 2:

Year Two

• TRU2914 Finding a Voice (15 Credits)

This creative writing module aims to give you an opportunity to develop your creative writing through a series of workshops. The module will develop writing practices through the examination of both fiction, poetry, and plays, in addition to practical exercises in creative writing. You will develop an appreciation of the process of writing, revising, and editing you work in response to an audience of peers and experts.

Through practical exercises and seminar discussions, you will explore a variety of textual forms, styles and content and build a project according to your own tastes and interests showing how you have implemented the techniques taught on the module.

Year Three

• TRU3041 Short Fiction (30 Credits)

This module will develop your writing practices by focusing on the short story. The module introduces a range of approaches to the genre from the traditional to the innovative. Published short fiction in English, along with short fiction translated from other languages, will serve as models toward a broad knowledge of the form.

Through practical exercises and workshop discussions of your own short fiction, you will develop awareness and understanding of textual forms, content, and style. You will also develop an appreciation of the processes involved in writing short fiction, including drafting, revising, editing, developing ideas, and awareness of audience. On completion of the module, you will have developed an appreciation of a range of short stories and their technical qualities—including narrative structures, voice, character, and the role of conflict.

Mathematics of the Environment

Level 2:

You will build core computational skills and use these to explore important societal themes from a mathematical perspective. Pre-requisite: A Level in Mathematics, or equivalent. Find out more on the module page.

Green Consultants

Level 2:

• GEO2449 Green Consultants

With a greater requirement than ever before to manage resources more efficiently and be green, the ability for industry to remain profitable and still competitively deliver products and services is fast becoming a real challenge. Acting as trainee consultants you will learn how to interact and consult with professionals, and how to influence the management of key resources by conducting waste, water, energy and carbon accounting.

You will help to introduce strategies to manage these resources more effectively, increase profitability and positively affect the environment. The module reflects the interdisciplinary nature of research on the campus and is complimentary to a variety of other modules that focus on the environment more widely.

This will involve a 35-hour on-campus project undertaken with the University of Exeter, FXPlus (Falmouth and Exeter estates management service) or the Students’ Union to put into practice what you have learnt during the training. Working in small consultancy project teams you consult directly with a client to develop a project brief, set up and attend management meetings and feedback progress to your clients and the Green Consultants management team. 

The final part of the programme is a placement. This must be for a minimum of 105 hours, and can be commenced from the end of March onwards with 105 hours completed prior to the submission of the online reflective video (any final year students undertaking this module will need to undertake their placement alongside the on-campus project or over the Easter vacation period). The placement must have an environmental or sustainability focus. It can include working for a company that has a direct sustainability focus (e.g. The Met Office), or working with a company that has no direct sustainability focus, where you can set up or support a sustainability-related project (e.g. working with a Chartered Surveyor practice to reduce their waste and travel impacts).

Assessment:

• Group Business Report, 2000 words, (40%)
• Group 20 min Presentation, (20%)
• Individual Internship Report, 1000 words (40%)

Most undergraduate students, regardless of degree subject, have the opportunity to study a language as part of their degree.

Employers are also increasingly looking for graduates across all subjects who have additional language skills, so this is a fantastic way of standing out from the crowd. Actually, if you study a language over at least a couple of years (60 credits), you can even have these skills officially acknowwledged on your degree title, as in 'BA in [insert your degree] with proficiency in [insert language]'
