HERA - Higher Education Role Analysis

All roles at the University are graded using the HERA scheme.  It is used to assess new roles and those which have changed significantly and on a permanent basis since their initial assessment.  The HERA Scheme was designed by the Education Competencies Consortium (ECC) together with Higher Education institutions, to support the implementation of the national Framework Agreement.  All roles at the University of Exeter were assessed using HERA as part of the local implementation of the Framework Agreement in 2006.

The HERA Scheme is a job evaluation scheme which ensures equal pay for work of equal value by measuring all roles by a single, consistent and fair methodology.

Roles are evaluated against 14 HERA elements.  Detailed evidence is provided on a job role assessment form, which is normally completed by managers.  This information is assessed by a trained HERA analyst under each element specifying what demands, responsibilities, knowledge and experience are formally required to carry out the role.
