Quaker Chaplaincy

'Quakers' is the name often used for the Religious Society of Friends. Although we have our roots in Christianity, we also find meaning and value in the teachings and insights of other faiths and traditions.

We believe there is something of God in everyone and this shapes all our relationships and the way we treat others. It means treating everyone with respect, whatever their circumstances, beliefs, race, age or gender. It also means translating our faith into action to make this world a better place, focusing in particular on peace, equality, truth, simplicity and sustainability.

You can find out more about Quakers on the Quakers in Britain website.

Chaplains serve all in the University of Exeter community; staff/students of any faith background or none. They offer specialist faith advice, pastoral and spiritual support and run events from various different faith traditions and worldviews.

Caroline Clunies-Ross (she/her): Pastoral Chaplain

I am at the Multi Faith Chaplaincy building on Fridays 12 noon - 4 pm and I look forward to welcoming students and staff, of any faith or none, to the building for a chat / cup of tea or to join us in a quiet “Quaker Pause” at 1-1:30pm (Fridays in term time) - with a hot drink and chat afterwards.

I’ve been a Quaker for nearly three decades and find the values of peace, equality, sustainability, simplicity, and truth are always relevant, often exciting, and frequently challenging.  I deeply value the perspective that there is “that of God in everyone” which seems particularly important in a multi faith context such as the University Chaplaincy and to me as a lesbian woman.

My working background was in the NHS (I still do a little bit of that) and I find great joy in sharing meals with friends and family and knitting using soft yarn in gorgeous colours!

If you would like to have chat or one-one you can get in contact with me via email at C.Clunies-Ross3@exeter.ac.uk

I love ideas - whether religious, philosophical, or scientific.  I also love walking in the country and gardening.

Quakers work to strengthen their spiritual practice within a community of silent worship, sometimes punctuated by ministry from any member of the community. This practice leads us to lovingly pursue the familiar Quaker goals of simplicity, truth, equality, peace and sustainability. Why not try us for a few months?
