Mary Harris Memorial Chapel of the Holy Trinity

About the Chapel

The Chapel, usually simply referred to as 'the Mary Harris Chapel' or 'Mary Harris', is situated at the heart of Streatham Campus, next to the Old Library. Built as a parting gift from the University's architect, Dr E. Vincent Harris (OBE), in memory of his mother, Mary.

Built in Harris' symmetrical style, it has a painted ceiling by Sir Thomas Monnington. It was consecrated by the Lord Bishop of Exeter on the 26th June 1958 and declared a Grade II listed building at Easter 1988.

The Chapel contains three alumni memorials for service personnel: two for those who lost their lives during both World Wars, and a third in memory of those who have died in conflicts since 1945.

Everyone is very welcome to the Chapel. You do not need to be a current or past member of the University, or a person of faith, to sit quietly and reflect a while, or simply look around.

Our chaplains

The Chapel is served by an Anglican priest – the Lazenby Chaplain – jointly appointed by the University of Exeter and the Diocese of Exeter, and funded by the Lazenby Trust.

The current Lazenby Chaplain is the Rev'd Hannah Alderson. Hannah is assisted by an Associate Priest, the Rev'd Sam Fletcher.
