Christmas 2021 on Exeter Campuses

Staying on campus or in Exeter over the winter break and Christmas? If so, check out the pages below to find out what facilities, services and events are available within the University.

Most facilities and services will be available as normal until Thursday 23 December, and will re-open for normal business on Tuesday 4 January. Between these times there may be limited opening hours and we advise you check details on this page.

If you’re staying on campus over the winter break, remember it’s important to keep testing for COVID-19. Regular testing will help protect those around you and ensure we can keep our University life moving for Term 2.

LFD home test kits and PCR/HALO tests will be available on campus until the 23 December and will resume again on the 4 January 2022.

Streatham Campus

The test centre at Car Park B will close from Thursday 23 December.
If you need an LFD test between 24 December and 3 January 2022, you can collect a home test kit from the Estate Patrol reception in Northcote House.

From 4 January, LFD testing will be via home testing kits – collection points at Streatham are listed on our testing website.

If you’re experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, however mild, and you need a PCR test between 24 December and 3 January, you can request one via the national testing scheme. If you are feeling unwell with a non COVID-19 issue and need help, don’t forget you can contact Estate Patrol, NHS 111 or 999 in an emergency.

St Luke's Campus

The test centre at Baring Court will close from Thursday 23 December.

If you need an LFD test between 24 December and 3 January 2022, you can collect a home testing kit from the Estate Patrol reception, Northcote House, Streatham Campus, or you can order one via the Government website.

The eight day festival of Hannukah is known as the Festival of Lights and is one of the most celebratory times in the Jewish calendar. Join us to hear the story of Hannukah and share in the lighting of the special candles led by JSoc and chaplaincy.

Traditional Christmas dinner - Friday 25 December 

In Exeter on Christmas Day (December 25)? Why not join our traditional Christmas Day Lunch in Lopes Hall from 12.30pm (for lunch at 1pm)? 

Tickets are £15.00 per adult, £10.00 per child and must be bookedbefore 12 noon, Friday 17 December. 

Arrival drink, 2 course lunch with all the trimmings, Christmas present and more included. All students and staff welcome with their families.Purchase tickets.

Christmas services

There are a range of events taking place at Exeter Cathedral throughout this month, up to and including Christmas Day. Places are limited because of COVID-19 restrictions and so please do book in advance. A Christmas Carol at the Nortcott Theatre

Featuring larger-than-life characters, Le Nave Bete's riotous reimagining of the Dickens classic includes giant exploding puddings, hypo-allergenic Christmas trees and a ‘Not So Tiny Tim’. With their trademark blend of slap-stick humour, quick wit and the occasional rib-bustingly funny bit of improv, A Christmas Carol promises to be yet another joyfully silly show.

Beauty and the Beast at the Corn Exchange

Much-loved regulars return as Gascon and Madame Bonbon, just two of the crazy characters who sing and dance and bring all the classic ingredients in Beauty and the Beast to make a good old-fashioned festive family panto!  The tale as old as time of Belle's adventure with the mysterious and moody Beast is told with our trademark comic invention for all those who need a great laugh!

Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market

Visit the Exeter's Christmas Market from 18 November - 18 December for some delicious christmas spirit. Ride the Elf Express on Friday evenings, Saturday and Sunday or just browse the stalls. 

In Exeter on Christmas Day (December 25)? Why not join our traditional Christmas Day Lunch in Lopes Hall dining room from 12.30pm with lunch served at 1pm?

Wellbeing Services will be operating a reduced service over the winter break.  

Up until Thursday 23 December, please call 01392 724381 if you need any support. Our wellbeing and welfare teams are ready to assist you.  

From Friday 24 December - Monday 4 January please contact Estate Patrol on 01392 723999 who will assess your call and get in touch with an on-call Wellbeing Adviser as appropriate. Estate Patrol is a mobile, response-based service covering all aspects of security, safety and welfare for staff and students.  

There is also a lot of information, advice and guidance on the University’s Wellbeing and Support webpages. This includes apps, webinars and workbooks which you may find helpful.  

Why not download the Fika app which is free for Uni students and can help you with its range of mental fitness courses? Download it from the app store or Google play free and enrol using your University email 

All students have access to Togetherall which is an online support community, offering peer and professional support and is available 24/7, 365 days of the year.

Postgraduate research students can also access Spectrum Life for counselling and support .

You can also contact The Samaritans on 116123. Or 999 in an emergency.

The Student Health centre will be offering NHS GP services to students from 8.30am – 6pm Monday to Friday except for Bank Holidays of Monday 27 December, Tuesday 28 December and Monday 3 January.

The GP surgery can provide virtual appointments by phone or video and will arrange face to face assessments if clinically required. Prescriptions can be sent electronically to a pharmacy local to you. Patients should call 01392 676606. You can find out more on their website.

Outside of these hours please phone NHS 111 for non-urgent medical advice. For medical emergencies please call 999.

Muslim Prayer – The Old Library prayer rooms (Streatham) and the prayer rooms at Staff House (St. Luke’s) will remain open during the University's closure period (25 December - 3 January 2021 inclusive) for students to access the prayer space.  This will be available via swipe card access.

Jewish Chaplaincy:

All in the Synagogue Zoom Room – contact Tony Reese, Jewish Chaplain, at A.J.Reese@exeter.ac.uk for codes.

  • Services every Friday at 6.45pm and Saturdays at 10.30am, including 24 and 25  December.
  • Online sessions at 6.15pm every Monday to Thursday.
  • Havdalah every Saturday at about 5pm.
  • Tea and chat every Thursday at 4pm.

Hanukkah: Candle lighting on December 3rd at 5:30pm in the Forum street, followed by festive treats at 6pm.

Christian events:

Christingle service Friday December 3 in the Forum street at 5pm, followed by lighting of Hanukkah candles at 5:30 and festive treats at 6pm. Drop by and make Christingles in the Forum from 12-2 and 4-5pm on Dec 3

Christmas Carol Services

The Career Zone will be open in the Forum, and online, Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm up to and including Friday 10 December. Between Monday 13 and Thursday 23 December our all services will be online only, including Live Chat, email and phone.

We will be fully closed from 5pm Thursday 23 December to 9am Tuesday 4 January, during which time you can still use Handshake to search for jobs and opportunities, and find extensive help and advice on My Career Zone Digital or our website – all details including live chat can be found at: www.exeter.ac.uk.careers  

Residence Receptions

Residence Reception opening hours will differ between Monday 20 December and Monday 3 January. To find out your reception’s opening hours, please see here. If your reception isn’t open during this period and you need help with lost keys or any other emergencies, please contact Estate Patrol.

Cleaning

University accommodation touch-point cleaning will continue throughout this period, to support those of you remaining on campus. This will be in line with term one and Public Health England guidance. Days where physical touch-point cleaning is not possible, cleaning materials will be provided to you.

The Digital Hub in Penryn and Exeter will be shut for face-to-face support between the following dates:

  • Friday, 10 December 2021 at 16:00 – opening 09:00, Tuesday, 4 January 2022

The IT Service Desk will be closed for support:

  • Thursday, 23 December 2021 at 18:00 – opening 08:00, Tuesday, 4 January 2022

The Estate Patrol Control Room is manned 24/7 this includes the Christmas closure period. Estate Patrol Officers will be available to provide advice, direction and attend incidents as required. The Non-emergency telephone line is 01392 723999, in cases of emergency individuals should contact the emergency services on 999 and then contact the Estate Patrol through their emergency line 01392 722222.  

In the event of an emergency involving student welfare, Estate Patrol (01392 723999) will be able to contact Student Services Senior Management Team staff to co-ordinate a response.

Over the winter break, student accommodation and residential heating will be run at normal term-time temperatures to support those still living on campus.

During the Christmas closure period, Saturday 25 December to Monday 3 January, the heating systems in all academic and academic-related buildings listed below will be run in an energy-saving mode that will maintain a minimum building temperature of around 12°C.

The temperature within buildings will be returned to normal levels within sufficient time to ensure the buildings are up to temperature for the return on Monday 4 January.
