Engineering (Streatham, Exeter & Penryn, Cornwall campuses)

Engineering combines science, creativity and critical thinking to solve significant challenges in society. Whether that’s finding innovative ways to meet the world’s growing demand for energy with minimal environmental impact, developing smarter and more efficient technologies, mining the raw materials for the low carbon economy, or designing new materials and systems that transform the way we live and work, engineers are the people who make it happen.
This unique subject activity strand will provide participants with a true understanding of what it means to be a 21st-century engineer. You will work with world-class engineers in mining, renewable energy solutions, and environmental engineering on our Penryn, Cornwall campus, and on our Streatham, Exeter campus, meet world class engineers in electronics, robotics, and mechanical engineering. This subject strand will explore the many different directions an engineering career can take.

Activity locations
Subject activity sessions will take place on the University of Exeter Streatham campus (three sessions) and the Penryn campus (two sessions), with the exception of one field trip (Leave from Streatham Campus).
Across six sessions you will explore the core branches of engineering through a mixture of academic tasters and practical challenges. The strand is designed to showcase the creativity, problem-solving and innovation that engineers bring to the world.
You will be introduced to civil engineering concepts by designing and testing structures using professional equipment to understand strength and stability. In mechanical engineering sessions, you will work with tools and materials to produce components and see how design choices affect performance. Through electrical and electronic engineering activities, you will investigate how systems are powered and controlled, with opportunities to experiment with robotics and other applications.
At our Penryn campus, you will also explore renewable energy engineering, taking part in activities linked to wind, solar and hydrogen fuel technologies. These sessions highlight how engineers are developing sustainable solutions to some of the biggest global challenges of our time.
Throughout the strand, you will engage with staff and current students, hear about cutting-edge research, and experience how engineering applies to real-world issues such as energy, transport, healthcare and technology. These sessions will give you both a flavour of university-level study and the opportunity to develop practical skills, teamwork and creativity. All central to the role of a 21st-century engineer.
Priority will be given to applicants studying A-Level Mathematics.
In order to pass the programme, you must attend a minimum of 5 out of 6 subject activity sessions, as well as the Exeter Scholars Student Conference.
