Health and Care Professions (St Luke's and Streatham campuses, Exeter)
Look beyond white coats and stethoscopes and discover the diverse range of professions, specialisms and career opportunities that make up modern healthcare. This subject strand brings together Medical Imaging (Radiography), Nursing, Applied Psychology and Sport and Health Science, giving you the opportunity to explore how different disciplines work together to understand health, support people and improve patient care.
You will explore what it means to work in healthcare through a range of engaging and practical sessions. You might investigate how psychological approaches can support mental health and wellbeing, discover how medical imaging technology helps diagnose illness and injury, develop an insight into the skills and responsibilities involved in Nursing, or explore how exercise and sport can influence health and performance. Along the way, you’ll gain an insight into the research, clinical practice and teaching taking place across the University of Exeter’s health and care disciplines.
By exploring these interconnected subjects, you will develop your understanding of the breadth of careers within health and care, as well as valuable skills in communication, problem-solving, critical thinking and practical application. Whether you’re interested in supporting people directly, using technology to improve diagnosis, understanding behaviour and mental health, or exploring the links between exercise and wellbeing, this strand will help you discover the many ways you could make a difference in healthcare.

There will be six sessions taught by academic staff from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, in which you will have the opportunity to engage in taster sessions in Medical Imaging (Radiography), Nursing, Applied Psychology and Sport and Health Science. These sessions will offer a practical insight into the different roles and approaches within modern healthcare, exploring topics including mental health and wellbeing, medical imaging, clinical practice and exercise and health. You will have the opportunity to develop your understanding of how different disciplines work together, while gaining insight into potential degree pathways, research and career opportunities within health and care. Sessions will take place at both the St Luke’s Campus and the Streatham Campus in Exeter - you will be informed in advance which campus your specific session will take place.
Students must have achieved grade C or 4 in both GCSE Maths and English Language.
Priority will be given to students studying one or more of the following subjects at A Level or the equivalent qualification:
Biology/Human Biology; Chemistry; Computing; Design and Technology; Electronics; Environmental Science; Environmental Studies; Geography; Geology; Maths/Pure Maths/Further Maths; Life and Health Sciences; Physical Education; Physics; Psychology; Science (applied); Statistics.
In order to pass the programme, you must attend a minimum of 5 out of 6 subject activity sessions, as well as the Exeter Scholars Student Conference.
