Pathways to Arts, Culture and Heritage

Pathways to Arts, Culture and Heritage offers organisations and businesses the opportunity to work with University of Exeter students keen to start their careers in this sector.

45 successful students, selected from a range of disciplines and year groups, will undertake a week of experiential learning delivered by industry experts, followed by a one-week, fully funded internship in a relevant workplace.

The programme runs concurrently at both the Penryn campus, Cornwall and the Streatham campus, Exeter taking advantage of the wealth of heritage and cultural organisations across the South West.

The training week is scheduled over 17-20 June 2019, we are looking for industry professionals who would enjoy delivering one of the sessions below:

  • Project Management
  • Fundraising
  • Communications and PR
  • Digitising Collections
  • Volunteer Management - recruitment and selection, training and motivating
  • Budget Management and Strategic Planning
  • Commercial Activities
  • Community Arts
  • Visitor and Customer Service
  • Digital Presence - social media, blogging and e-commerce
  • Evaluation Theory

The sessions are based on the specialisations of the industry professionals available to take part, if you would like to deliver a session and have a suggestion for a different topic the team would be happy to hear from you.

Each session will be delivered in a classroom setting with paper, pens, post-its and other materials available on request to create a workshop style session. We expect 20-25 students to be taking part and for the session to last 45-60 minutes.

We are seeking established employers based in Devon, Cornwall or London who can offer an interesting project for a student to undertake either in the workplace or working remotely. The role should involve 35 hours of work between 24-28 June 2019.

As the University will fully-fund the student's internship wages, we will employ and pay them through our payroll, but the student will be seconded to your organisation. Therefore all parties will need to sign the completed Student Secondment Agreement, and you will need to have suitable liability insurance. The role must:

  • Be within the arts, culture and/or heritage sector
  • Use undergraduate level skills, knowledge and/or experience.
  • Aid career development
  • Include tasks and responsibilities normally associated with a graduate level position
  • Provide training and support
  • Be undertaken at full time (35 hours per week) for the week of the 24th – 28th June 2019

Applications will close on 24th April 2019, shortly after this point we will review all the applications and a member of our team will let you know if your vacancy has been accepted.

Please note that when submitting an employer vacancy application you are declaring that you wish to employ an intern rather than a declaration of interest or a request for further information about the scheme.

All students will go through a rigourous recruitment and selection process conducted by the University, to ensure we select the best candidates.

Students will be presented with all the internships opportunities on offer and asked to identify their preferences. We will make the final decision of who will be matched to your opportunity and as such, your organisation will not need to undertake any recruitment or selection process of our students.

Once we have identified the most suitable intern for you we will send you their details in early June 2019. We very much hope that you will be satisfied with our selection, however if for any reason this is not the case, you will have the opportunity to withdraw from the scheme. Unfortunately at this stage of the recruitment process, we will not be able to find a replacement intern. 

At the beginning of the internship, we ask that you work through a basic induction with your new intern. You have the option to use some or all of our Internship Induction Checklist.

We ask employers to set clear objectives for the intern and be available to provide information and guidance throughout the week. 

The Professional Pathways team will be available during the internship week to support you and your intern should this be required. 

We may also ask to visit your workplace to collect photos of the intern at work for our social media, case studies and a press release. If you are keen to be included in this please let the team know.

At the end of the internship week we ask that you please complete the online Internship Evaluation Form and encourage your intern to complete their Internship Evaluation too. These will be emailed to you towards the end of the internship, your comments will be taken into account during our evaluation exercise.

All parties (the employer, the University and the intern), must adhere to the Student Secondment Agreement‌. This agreement ensures the student is committed to the internship and both the employer and the University understand the remit of their duty of care for the student. This document must be signed by all three parties before the internship can begin.
