Exeter University Club Exeter Branch: Bird watching cruise from Exmouth Dock

An Alumni and supporters alumni event
Date23 February 2013
Time11:15
PlaceExmouth Dock, Stuart Lines Office on Exmouth seafront. Sat Nav EX8 1DS.

Please note you must book to attend the event. Join other Exeter University Club members for a three hour Stuart Lines cruise with full commentary by Ian Waite, an experienced and enthusiastic wildlife commentator who will help identify the birds we see and inform on their feeding habits, breeding patterns and preferred habitats. The Exeter University Club is a social organisation with branches across the country aiming to bring alumni together.

The Exe Estuary is one of UK’s most important areas for over-wintering birds. Shallow waters and extensive mudflats provide ideal habitats for a huge variety of different species including curlew, redshank, avocet, shelduck and oystercatcher for example.

Our boat has an open top deck and a heated, enclosed lower deck; there are toilets on board and a small selection of light snacks is available. The hot soup is recommended! But as we cruise over lunchtime you are welcome to bring a packed lunch in case the limited on-board supplies run out or do not suit your requirements.

Do bring binoculars if you have them or borrow some free of charge from the small stock available on board. Please dress warmly as it can be very cold and windy on the river in February!

The boat departs promptly at 11.15am – time and tide wait for no man – and you must be ready to board at 11am, with your ticket in your hand, as these popular cruises are usually full.

I have reserved spaces for ‘Exeter University Club’ and you must buy your ticket yourself by telephone and collect it on the day from Stuart Lines Office on Exmouth seafront. Sat Nav EX8 1DS.

The group ticket hotline is 01395 279693: bookings close on 1 February.
Ring this number, identify yourself as an Exeter University Club member and book as many tickets as you need for the concessionary price of £9.50p per adult. Tickets will be ready for collection on cruise day, from Stuart Lines Office, at the western end of the Esplanade close to where we board.

How to get there:
Exmouth has good bus and train services and for car drivers the seafront and Stuart Line Cruises are signed from the town roundabout by the station. There is a small Pay & Display car park close to the docks and from October to March seafront parking is free; however this can quickly fill up on a fine day!

I look forward to seeing you.

Contact Louise Clunies-Ross during January with any queries (01884 242606).
