Event details

'Simultaneous Shakespeare’ was created by Nicola Pollard, a Staging Shakespeare MFA student at the University of Exeter, and features casts drawn from both undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts in both Cambridge and Exeter.

The performances will bring the curtain up and down simultaneously and allow audiences, actors and crew to feel part of a theatre experience crossing two hundred miles.

A project such as this has not been attempted between the two universities before, thus making this the first time the two cities and their universities have been linked in such a manner.

This term I am directing a collaborative project between the universities of Exeter and Cambridge, where I read my undergraduate degree. Entitled ‘Simultaneous Shakespeare’, we will perform Shakespeare’s ‘The Two Gentlemen of Verona’ on Saturday November 26th in both the cities, at the same time. We hope to be able to have a live video feed between the two venues to enable audiences, actors and crew to share a theatrical experience across 200 miles. All of those involved are students or graduates of the two universities, including first years to second year PhDs. All together there are over forty people working in the cast or on the creative team.

This project allows an infrequently performed play to be enjoyed by those both internal and external to the university. It is my hope that this project will continue to build on links between the universities and the residents of Exeter and Cambridge. I believe there should be increased dialogue between students and residents, particularly when students can illustrate the positive contributions we can make to the locality.

Both performances are raising money for worthy charities, the South West Children’s Hospice and the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. All cast and crew members are doing this voluntarily, for what we hope will be two engaging performances within a unique night of theatre.
