Swann at 100/Swann à 100 ans

This conference brings together leading Proust scholars to discuss and assess Du côté de chez Swann a century after its original publication. Swann is a landmark in literary modernism, the portal to Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu and a cultural pivot between the late nineteenth-century and a world soon changed beyond recognition by the Great War. How does the contemporary status of the first volume of A la recherche compare to that of other works produced that extraordinary year (such as Apollinaire’s Alcools, Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers, Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel or Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring)? A century on, where does Proust’s work of high art belong in a world dominated by high speed and the quick fixes of popular culture? Genetic criticism and digital technologies have radically altered the way we archive, access, publish and explore Proust’s writings and others from his era. What will the next hundred years of Proust scholarship hold? These and other questions will be discussed and debated at Reed Hall in December 2013.

There will be six panel sessions of three papers as well as the three following plenary lectures:
