Theme park interactive game

An interactive exhibition which will create a one day theme park in Exeter Library

Event details

Who should attend?

Anyone is welcome to attend this open event which forms part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council's Being Human festival.

What is the event about?

This multi-format event “creates” a theme park inspired by Exeter in Roman times in which hands-on activities, screenings, and installations will reproduce different sections of a theme park, from a roller coaster and photo opportunities to midway games.

Visitors go through the installations alone or in groups, engaging with the different needs of the single individuals, and/or enhancing the fun through group dynamics. At the end, visitors will reflect with theme park researchers on the relevance of what they experienced.

The event portrays the variety of activities and structures of a theme park focussing on the complex temporality experienced there – from the “past” theme, to the acceleration and slowing down which are characteristic of the single attraction, to the necessity of understanding time as a commodity.

A theme park, perceived by most people as simply a destination for a leisure trip, will be revealed to be an object of complex interdisciplinary research. The event thus provides an opportunity to learning-by-doing and to engage with original humanities research.
