Climate change is very likely to result in changes to pollen. This could mean changes in the overall amount, in the species involved, and in turn in the seasonal appearance of respiratory symptoms. We know that the impacts on health are considerable, but we dont know how best to monitor the cause, model the response, and plan for the future. What are current immunological trends? How can we combine that knowledge with our meteorology? What is the relationship with air quality? How can we improve monitoring? How can we assess the demand for health care provision?

These are complex questions, but when it comes to applying meteorology, we have much to build upon.  The Met Office now manages the only pollen count monitoring network in the UK. They combine information from our network, their weather data and expertise from other organisations to produce 2-, 3-, and 5-day forecast, as well as a monthly outlook.  These services are freely available and are designed to help support allergy and hay fever sufferers through the most difficult time of the year.  In the UK we have considerable historical pollen data, thanks to dedicated teams throughout the country.  At the same time there is considerable work ongoing at the European level, for example through the European Aeroallergen Network and the HIALINE Project.

We now want to build on all that, alongside all our academic partners.  We want to bring health, pollen and meteorology experts together to work out how to fill the research gaps that are hindering progress.  By inviting you to London this December, we hope that you will help us in moving the agenda forwards.
