Find out about how the Hub is helping support biomedical research across the University
| A Research and Knowledge Transfer research event | |
|---|---|
| Date | 16 January 2013 |
| Time | 14:00 to 16:45 |
| Place | Geoffrey Pope Room 328b Video-link to Tremough (Athenaeum - Room 3039, Daphne De Maurier) |
The new Wellcome Trust Biomedical Informatics Hub team invites you to attend the first of our bi-monthly Hub seminar series.
A fairly informal gathering, which will rotate between the campuses, the seminars will comprise two/three presentations demonstrating what the Hub team is doing to support biomedical research across the University. Hear from Hub members themselves about latest innovations in their specialist areas, including bioinformatics, image analysis, statistics and modelling. There will also be presentations from those who have benefited from Hub support. Refreshments will be served and there will be opportunity to meet the Hub team and network with other researchers.
Presentations
- Venura Perera (Biomedical Informatics Hub) - A blind search for patterns
Ven is a member of the Wellcome Trust Biomedical Informatics Hub. He is based in Biosciences, working in the Exeter Metabolite Centre on analysis of complex mass spectrometry proteomics and metabolomics data. Ven's presentation will be on methodologies to reveal hidden patterns in untargeted small molecule profiling.
- David Griffiths (FoA) - Lobsters, robots and genes - some cross-disciplinary case studies
Dave will talk about a variety of projects he's been involved in which showcase cross-disciplinary working, involving artists, computer scientists, dog ethologists, robotics engineers and wildlife conservation researchers. Aspects of working with different types of people are examined and how solutions can be found to known problems and, more importantly - sometimes problems you never knew you had!
- James Wakefield (Biosciences) - Microtubules, MAPs and Mitosis: a holistic approach to understanding Cell Division
James is a Senior Lecturer in Cell Biology, with research interests in mitosis and cell division and its key role in diseases such as cancer.
