The Digital Humanities Lab's first Digi-versary celebration

Join us for a day of digital-themed activities as we celebrate the lab's first year.

The Digital Humanities team invite staff and students across the University to celebrate our first birthday by participating in a day of digital-themed activities.

Event details

The Digital Humanities team invite staff and students across the University to celebrate our first birthday by participating in a day of digital-themed activities. The Digital Humanities Lab opened on 23rd October 2017, and during our first year we have engaged with and supported many exciting humanities and cultural heritage research projects, delivered a series of digital training opportunities to staff and over 50 volunteers, and played host to a number of high-profile events.

We will be celebrating these achievements with visual displays of the highlights, including current research, recent projects, and the work of our undergraduate Intern team who have been supporting our staff and postgraduate researchers across the Humanities disciplines.

Drop in throughout the day and participate in our informal, inclusive digital-themed activities to get a sense of how you might incorporate digital techniques into your research and teaching - whilst having some fun!

Event programme, Tuesday 23rd October 2018

10:00-12:00 Drop In and Digitise

Photography lab 1

Bring along your research artefacts, or materials from a personal collection that you would like to digitise, for example photographs, postcards or letters (they don’t need to be centuries old, just important to you). See them in ultra-high resolution and take home a digital copy for personal use (bring your own USB memory stick).

12:00-14:30, Wikipedia Collaborative Editathon led by Jason Evans, National Wikimedian, National Library of Wales

Digital Humanities Seminar 1

The editathon will include an informal introduction to the Wikipedia basics including how to set up an account and edit, followed by group editing around any subject. Bring your own material to edit, including your text and copyright-free images. Jason will bring some official Wikipedia editing guides for participants and provide advice and support where required. You will need to bring a laptop to participate.

15:00-17:00, Digi-versary Hackathon

Digital Humanities Seminar 1

Participate in a collaborative hackathon, learn to engage with robots and their components and operate them for use in a learning environment. No previous experience required, but if you have your own robots, do bring them along!

3D printing and audio-visual demonstrations of the use of our equipment will be available in our MakerSpace and Audio-Visual Lab throughout the day.

Refreshments including tea, coffee, a first birthday cake and cookies made with our 3D printed plant-derived cookie cutters will be served in the Digital Humanities Lab breakout space from 14:00. We look forward to celebrating the Lab’s success with you.

Numbers may be limited for some of the organised sessions, so to reserve a place, please register your attendance via our Eventbrite page. Should you have any queries regarding the event please contact the Digital Humanities Lab via email: digitalhumanities@exeter.ac.uk.
