First Line Management (element of ILM Award Level 3)
| Description | Who is it for? All staff who manage staff and who have 1-3 years of experience with some, little or no management development.
What is it about? This 5 day programme consists of interactive workshops with pre-reading, diagnostic tests, 1-1 support and guided learning materials that will give you a firm foundation in the skills and understanding needed to manage others, including staff who supervise or lead a team. There will be 20 minute tutorial sessions open to participants to assist you in your learning. If you are interested in taking the ILM qualification associated with this course please contact ilmcentre@exeter.ac.uk expressing your interest. Please note that a registration fee is payable by your department if you wish to take the qualification. What will I get out of it? - An understanding of what first line managers need to be able to do to bring out the best in the staff they manage. - Knowledge of how to solve problems. - Understanding of how to motivate staff. - Knowledge of the processes and practicalities of understanding change in the University and managing its impact on your team(s); how to plan effectively and support staff through periods of change. - Techniques and activities you can use in the workplace to encourage, support and develop your team. Course overview 1/ How to describe a problem, its nature, scope and impact. 2/ How to gather and interpret information to solve a problem. 3/ How to solve a problem. 4/ How to plan the implementation and communication of decisions. 5/ Change in an organisation. 6/ The effects of change on people and finance in the organisation. 7/ The forces of change in an organisation. 8/ Planning of change in an organisation. 9/ Continuous improvement in an organisation. 10/ How to use effective time management to prioritise and achieve objectives. 11/ The value of assessing performance to meet organisational and individual needs. 12/ How to motivate the team to improve performance in the workplace. 13/ The value of feedback in the workplace.
Is there anything I need to do before attending? You must complete the pre-reading before attending the course. Details of the pre-reading shall be sent to you nearer the date.
