PCAP Module 1 (Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice)

Description

What is it about?

This module aims to provide a theoretical grounding in the principles of academic practice and its political and social contexts.

Its purpose is to support participants in building on their existing skills and knowledge as highly able autonomous learners in order to act as effective academics operating with integrity in their departments, in the university and in the national and international context.

It is intended to enhance the confidence and effectiveness of participants through informed reflection on their own practice.

What will I get out of it?

By the end of this module, you should be able to demonstrate.

Module-specific skills.

1) Knowledge of, and ability to work with, key theoretical and research-based debates about academic practice.

2) Critical understanding of the organisational culture of the University of Exeter and the requirements placed on academic staff, and the ability to relate this to the broader social and political context of higher education in the UK and beyond.

3) Comprehensive understanding of selected techniques/methodologies applicable to academic practice in relation to areas such as teaching and learning, research, administration and external work.

4) Ability to explore critically, with originality, an individual area, relating to the contemporary academic in context, relevant to their own practice.

Discipline-specific Skills.

5) Critical awareness of higher education policy and its implications for professional academic practice.

6) Critical and analytical engagement with education-related literature and ability to cite and reference it appropriately.

7) Critical awareness of similarities and differences in the cultures of different subject disciplines.

8) Ability to evaluate alternative forms of theoretical and research based knowledge.

Personal and Key Skills.

9) Ability to engage in independent study informed by the presentation and analysis of materials and issues in group discussion.

10) Ability to reflect on personal and professional values and their implications for practice.

11) Ability to prepare, select and organise material to present a coherent portfolio which communicates clearly and effectively.
