PCAP Module 3 (Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice)

Description

What is it about?

To develop the effectiveness of participants as academics at the University of Exeter through systematic enquiry into, and critical reflection upon, salient issues of professional practice in the related fields of teaching, learning and research.

The module will contribute to the development of effective, academically credible and ethical strategies for professional success amongst participants.

What will I get out of it?

By the end of this module you should be able to demonstrate.

Module-specific skills.

1) Critical engagement with the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in Higher Education and its implications for practice.

These standards include the following areas of activity.

- The design and planning of learning activities and/or programmes of study.

- Teaching and/or supporting student learning with appropriate reference to learning technologies.

- Assessment and giving feedback to learners.

- Developing effective environments and student support and guidance with appropriate reference to issues of widening participation, equality and diversity.

- Integration of scholarship, research and professional activities with teaching and supporting learning.

- Evaluation of practice (including quality monitoring) and continuing professional development.

2) Ability to reflect on their own professional values in relation to learning, teaching and research.

3) Ability to reflect critically on their own professional practice, including the relationship between teaching and research strategies.

Discipline-specific skills.

4) Critical awareness of higher education policy and its implications for professional academic practice.

5) Critical and analytical engagement with education-related literature and ability to cite and reference it appropriately.

6) Critical awareness of similarities and differences in the cultures of different subject disciplines.

7) Ability to evaluate alternative forms of theoretical and research based knowledge.

Personal and Key Skills.

8) Ability to reflect on personal and professional values and their implications for practice.

9) The identification of professional learning needs.

10) The preparation, selection and organisation of material to produce a coherent portfolio reflecting important issues, interests and learning needs.

11) Innovation and originality in problem-solving.
