Mental Health: Supporting students who experience mental health difficulties

What is it about?

This course is aimed at personal tutors, disability contacts within academic schools, resident tutors and anyone who else who may support students experiencing mental health difficulties.

This workshop will: - Explore how mental health difficulties may affect students, their ability to cope with their studies and their life while at university.

- Enable staff to have a greater understanding of how best to support them.

This workshop will include a variety of teaching approaches including discussion and small group work.

Aims and Outcomes:

- To increase participants awareness of mental health difficulties.

- To increase participants confidence in supporting students with mental health difficulties in appropriate and effective ways.

What will I get out of it?

By the end of the session participants will be able to.

- Name the different types of mental illness and how it is experienced by students.

- Recognise when a student is experiencing difficulties.

- Consider the aspects of supporting a student from an individual and university perspective.

- Know what services are available for students and for staff, to support them in their role.
