Coaching Skills for Academic Leads
| Description | The current system of academic appraisals is undergoing a significant overhaul. The revised approach will retain a strong focus on goals and achievement but is intended to be more supportive, more flexible and more individualised. Putting coaching techniques centre stage is a simple and effective way of quickly changing the dynamic of a review meeting. Coaching skills can also be extremely helpful in a broader range of situations, such as supervising students and improving personal relationships. Indicative programme: - Framing the role of coaching in the appraisal process: acknowledging the creative tension between individual and institution. - The coaching approach as a state of mind: how to adopt this alternative identity. - Listening to what is said and listening to what is not said. - How to ask powerful questions. - Power and direction in the relationship: boundaries and the spectrum of styles. - The GROW model: Goals, Reality, Options, Will. - Dealing with barriers. Who should attend: All Academic Leads, Heads of Discipline, Associate Deans and Deans.
Aims and Outcomes: The session will focus on developing practical interpersonal skills, to be used by all participants on a regular basis in the course of their duties as lead academics. The ability to conduct a coaching conversation in a range of contexts.
