Coaching Skills for Academic Leads

Description

The current system of academic appraisals is undergoing a significant overhaul.

The revised approach will retain a strong focus on goals and achievement but is intended to be more supportive, more flexible and more individualised.

Putting coaching techniques centre stage is a simple and effective way of quickly changing the dynamic of a review meeting.

Coaching skills can also be extremely helpful in a broader range of situations, such as supervising students and improving personal relationships.

Indicative programme: - Framing the role of coaching in the appraisal process: acknowledging the creative tension between individual and institution.

- The coaching approach as a state of mind: how to adopt this alternative identity.

- Listening to what is said and listening to what is not said.

- How to ask powerful questions.

- Power and direction in the relationship: boundaries and the spectrum of styles.

- The GROW model: Goals, Reality, Options, Will.

- Dealing with barriers.

Who should attend: All Academic Leads, Heads of Discipline, Associate Deans and Deans.

Aims and Outcomes:

The session will focus on developing practical interpersonal skills, to be used by all participants on a regular basis in the course of their duties as lead academics.

The ability to conduct a coaching conversation in a range of contexts.
