Effective Middle Manager Programme - Understanding Performance Management (ILM)

Description

Who is it for?

All staff who manage staff and who have 1-3 years of experience with some, little or no management development.

What is it about?

This is one of a cluster of workshops that comprise the Effective Middle Manager?s Programme.

The programme is designed to give you a firm foundation in the skills and understanding needed to manage others, including staff who supervise or lead a team.

This particular workshop explores how you can agree and set objectives and performance standards and what to do about staff who fail to meet these.

What will I get out of it?

You will understand the value of assessing performance, know how to manage performance of individuals and understand the value of feedback in the workplace.

Specifically, at the end of the workshop you will be able to: - Describe the value of formal and informal performance assessment in the workplace.

- Explain the role of the first line manager in performance management.

- Identify ways to ensure fair and objective formal assessment.

- Explain how to set SMART objectives for a team member.

- Explain how to set performance standards for a team member.

- Explain how to measure performance against agreed standards.

- Explain the importance of feedback to improve performance.

- Describe how to give effective feedback.

- Identify potential areas of underperformance in the workplace.

- Identify causes for failure to meet agreed performance levels.

- Describe actions to restore performance to acceptable levels.

This is carried out as part of the ILM Award and features a written assignment.
