Videoconferencing for Teaching - A Hands on Workshop

Description

This workshop aims to prepare staff for the experience of teaching by videoconference in a small group setting.

It is designed to demonstrate the differences between face-to-face and videoconferenced teaching, but also to give you some experience of what it feels like (i) to lecture and (ii) to be lectured to, in a videoconferenced environment.

This workshop has an upper limit of 7 participants.

The session is primarily aimed at academics who are already or will be teaching to students via videoconference, either internally between lecture theatres, or between campuses.

This course is also suitable for academics who will be having their lectures video recorded for publishing onto Exeter's VLE (Virtual Learning Environment).

Aims and Outcomes:

By the end of the session you should be able to.

-Understand the impact on an audience of using VC technology for learning and teaching.

-Demonstrate awareness of effective strategies to engage a remote audience.

-Give and receive constructive feedback to others on aspects of presentational style and its impact on a remote audience in a VC setting.

-Understand the ways in which using VC will impact on aspects of content, structure and style and identify possible solutions.

Is there anything I need to do before attending?

PREPARATION.

You are asked to bring with you a 5-minute long 'mini lecture' so that you can participate in a short element of role play, simulating a videoconferenced lecture.

This will be recorded and provided to you after the session for you to review.

This recording will only be provided to you and no other copies will be made.
