Decarbonising Britain

The lecture will draw on the work of the Committee on Climate Change

Decarbonising Britain lecture on 13th April 2011

On Wednesday 13th April, Dr Samuel Fankhauser, Deputy Director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change at the London School of Economics will deliver a lecture on "Decarbonising Britain".

Drawing on the work of the Committee on Climate Change and LSE-research, the presentation will set out how the UK intends to meet its statutory 80% greenhouse gas target.

It will briefly introduce the regulatory provisions of the 2008 Climate Change Act e.g., on target setting and monitoring and then explore, sector by sector, how decarbonisation might work in the UK.

At the core of Britain's decarbonisation strategy is a carbon-free electricity sector, but emission reductions also have to occur in agriculture, transport, industry and the residential sector.

We will look at Britain's policy landscape and discuss some of the policy challenges, including how Britain can maintain the carbon price and pursue a tight emissions target within an EU-wide emissions trading scheme that is less stringent.”

The Public Lecture will start at 5 pm (doors open 4.30 pm) in the Xfi Lecture Theatre and we aim to finish by 6.30 pm.

Date: 23 March 2011
