Help the Hog

When did you last see a hedgehog?  A few years ago hedgehogs were common night visitors to urban gardens.  But now it is hard to spot a hog at night even if you leave food out for them.

Why is this? Hedgehogs need a network of wildlife-friendly gardens, parks and green spaces in order to forage for food. This green landscape network is being lost to new buildings, roads and impenetrable fences. Hedgehogs now find themselves in a much less friendly landscape in which there are fewer places to hibernate and less space to forage.

So what can be done to make Devon a more hedgehog-friendly place? This spring and summer Devon Wildlife Trust is running a Help the Hog campaign and you can play your part by:

  • making your garden more hedgehog-friendly with a few simple steps

  • filling in the Help the Hog survey form on our website telling us when you last saw a hedgehog

To Help the Hog please visit www.devonwildlifetrust.org to fill out our survey and get useful tips on wildlife gardening.
