Bike Week Events, 18 -26 June 2011

The week will be kicked off with a delicious commuter breakfast and end with a social at the Double Locks pub.  Other activities include Cyclist Lotto, Bike Fair, Dr. Bike and a Biodiversity Bike Ride.

All Week

Cyclist Lotto Draw - Throughout the week 5 lucky cyclists will be selected at random to receive a Cafe Reed meal voucher. Make sure you cycle in every day to our Exeter campuses to increase your chances of being selected!

Monday 20th June:

Commuter Breakfast - Fancy a well deserved breakfast treat after cycling into work? Come along to Xfi plaza between 8.30am -9.30am. Get there early to make sure you get your pick of the breakfast treats on offer!

Thursday 23rd June

St. Luke’s to Streatham Bike Ride and Picnic Lunch - Would you like to cycle between our Exeter campuses? Would you like to be shown the best route? A guided bike ride will start at 12pm at St. Luke’s campus (next to the Pool Bike Lockers, adjacent to North Cloisters) and finish on Streatham campus for a free picnic! If you don’t have a bike you can hire one of our two Pool Bikes (free of charge), these can be booked at the St. Luke’s Porters’ Lodge. You do not need to register for this event. Friday 24th June

Bike Fair - Is your bike in need of some TLC? Thinking about buying a bike? Would you like to find out about Cyclescheme? The bike fair will be held next to Devonshire House (opposite Coffee Express), 11.30am -2pm. At the bike fair this year will be:

  • Bikeshed Dr. Bike will be on hand to give your bike a free basic M.O.T.
  • This is a popular service, so it is recommended that you apply for a guaranteed slot;
  • Cyclescheme will be there to tell you all about how you can save money when you buy a bike through the scheme;
  • Exeter Cycle Surgery will be exhibiting a selection of the cycles they sell;
  • Exeter Mountain Bike Club is a bike club open to everyone. Members of the club will be there to let you know all about their club and how you can join;
  • Sustrans, a leading sustainable transport charity, will be on hand to offer advice on cycling and to fill you in on all the great work they are doing on a national scale to promote and facilitate cycling.;
  • The University’s Travel Plan Coordinator will be selling subsidised cycle lights for £5, offering cycle maps, advice and freebies!
  • The University’s Health and Wellness Officer will be there to give you details on the free adult cycle training offered by the University.

Biodiversity Bike Ride - Come along on this unique guided bike ride and find out about Exeter’s rich biodiversity while enjoying a scenic bike ride. We will meet at the Amory cycle parking facilities at 4pm, and go on to the University ponds, where we will dicsover what the University is doing to increase biodiversity on our campuses. We will cycle down to the Exeter Quay where Devon Wildlife Trust will give a whistle stop tour of their visitors’ centre and then onto the Exe Estuary. On the ride, Devon Wildlife Trust will tell us all about the fantastic flora and fauna in the area, give advice on how you can foster biodiversity in your gardens, and much more... We might even see salmon leaping upstream! You do not need to register for this event. Contact Julia Jack with any queries.

Double Locks Social - The Biodiversity Bike Ride will finish at approximately 5.30pm at the Double Locks Pub for a well deserved drink! If aren’t able to come along to the Biodiversity Bike Ride you are still welcome to come along to the social. Make sure you bring along your cycle lights and high visibility gear as there are no street lights in the park, which will be the journey home for many people.
