Campus Services achieve top environmental management accolade
Campus Services has been awarded the IS014001 certification for its Environmental Management System, making the University one of a relatively small group of universities to have achieved the standard.
The ISO14001 accreditation highlights the robust policies and procedures in place which allow the service to clearly demonstrate its improvements in environmental performance. The ISO14001 certification looks at all aspects of the organisation, from legal requirements through to grounds management, environmental communication, construction and refurbishment.
Feedback from the report highlighted that there is clear evidence that Campus Services are committed to minimising environmental impacts at all levels. Particular praise was given to construction activities which the Estate Development Service lead on. Also highlighted was the Higher Hoopern Farm Resource Centre which has been developed to help make centrally managed reuse and recycling easier and to reduce fly tipping on the site. This development has helped to support the University’s ongoing target to recycle 45% of waste by 2015 and reduce the amount of waste generated by 1% year on year.
Karen Gallagher, Sustainability Manager said: “I am delighted that we achieved ISO14001. This certification recognises our dedication and commitment to continuously improving our environmental standards across the University. Much of the work Campus Services does underpins the running of the University and to know we are working so productively and efficiently is fantastic.”
Jilly Court, Director of Operations, explains: “Achieving this certification is another step in improving our environmental performance and reducing the University’s impact on our environment and community. Congratulations to the whole team for their effort and hard work in gaining this recognition and success.”
