Student's Guild achieve British standard for its Environmental Management System
The University of Exeter Students’ Guild has been awarded Acorn BS8555 (phases 1-3) certification for its Environmental Management System.
Although a handful of Universities have been given the accreditation, the Students’ Guild is the first student union to achieve the British Standard.
The Acorn BS8555 accreditation looks at all aspects of the organisation; from legal requirements, compliance checks and waste management through to refurbishment, provision of student space, environmental communication and procedures in office administration, catering and retail activities.
Phase 3 accreditation showcases that the Guild had sound management programmes and operational procedures in place to comply with environmental management legislation and other voluntary requirements. It also means that the organisation will be able to meet its objectives and targets in the reduction of negative environmental impacts, in all key areas of its operation.
The Students’ Guild has been praised for its enthusiasm in promoting environmental action plans and to achieving good environmental practice.
Norrie Blackeby, Head of Facilities of Central Services, said: “I am delighted with this achievement. This accreditation confirms the Guild’s commitment and dedication towards environmental issues and management”.
James Hutchinson, Chief Executive explains: “We are incredibly proud to have passed the rigorous Acorn accreditation assessment. This follows several years of hard work by staff, students and volunteers committed to improving the Students' Guild's environmental management practices. We now look forward to building on this success, recognising that we can always do more to ensure we reduce our impact on the environment”.
