Salam has held the post of the South West Prevent Regional Co-ordinator for Further Education and Higher Education since 2013. Salam’s role is to engage with and support universities and colleges on the Prevent agenda. Her role includes; briefings to vice-chancellors, principals and governors, delivering training, engaging with students, assisting with institutional policies, attending compliance working groups and providing advice and guidance regarding referrals and external speaker requests. Salam acts as the conduit between universities and colleges and other stakeholders such as the; Counter Terrorism Unit, Police, Home Office and Department for Education.

Salam has a BA in English Literature and History from Damascus University and a Masters with Distinction in International Relations; Global Security and Development from the University of Plymouth. Salam also completed a course at Kings College; 'The Issue of Radicalisation in Countering Terrorism', securing the mark of Distinction. This academic background has allowed Salam to develop an extensive knowledge of the threat of terrorism and the CONTEST strategy. Furthermore, her dissertation, which focussed on Syria and Iraqi refugees, is currently being published by Routledge and is titled ‘Handbook on Middle Eastern Cities’. In addition to her Prevent role, Salam has recently secured the post of a Deployable Civilian Expert (DCE) within the UK Government’s Stabilisation Unit (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) to advance the UK’s interests in relation to Counter Terrorism and Counter Extremism overseas.

Salam is a Syrian Muslim and possesses a deep understanding of the Islamic faith and culture which provides a unique perspective to her Prevent role. She also has a passion for languages, speaking Arabic, English and Spanish and has a Diploma in Police Interpreting (DPI).
