"Exeter is a fabulous base to launch your career from. Gaining practical skills and experience to help your employability is part of student life at Exeter, and it is certainly a main reason why I chose to study here. What I like about Exeter is the positive and supportive vibes the University, and its students, create in this area. This gives students the confidence to pursue their passions and enhance their personal development.
Degrees at Exeter are not just academic, they’re career orientated. There are dedicated employability modules in all degrees. Students can become proficient in a skill or subject outside of their degree discipline which can be added to their degree title. Other opportunities for students to enhance their employability alongside their studies include part-time jobs, internships, and society positions. This year I landed my first internship with an international non-profit organisation, and I know the positions I have pursued at Exeter assisted in my successful application to this internship. There is also a career mentor scheme where students can be paired with a professional in their desired career sector who is available for specific guidance and advice."

"In my first year of university, we had a module called ‘Skills and Careers’, and through this we were guided through finding a work placement. I found a wildlife hospital close to home where I spent two weeks working. It has given me so much insight into how to approach companies for experience and also provided me with useful animal husbandry skills.
After graduating, I would love to get into the field of science communication. So, for the past year I have been writing articles and illustrating for the University of Exeter and Falmouth University’s student-led natural science publication, and being on the society’s committee has hugely helped to improve my written communication skills, collaboration and working to deadlines. Hopefully my role in the society will help towards my future ambitions!"

"I’ve learned a lot from my time here in Exeter that has prepared me for my future career. The University of Exeter Career Zone has been exceptionally helpful to me, as well as bits and bobs worked into my degree and even jobs and internships that the University offers.
The Career Zone also has timetabled employability sessions that dig into what sorts of roles you should explore based on what you value. This is worked into your uni schedule so you can’t miss it and you don’t have to book anything in. It also helps inform you on what employers are looking for and what kinds of traits you should focus on on a CV. They can look over your CV as well to make adjustments to make sure you get the best shot of employment.
The University has a super high graduate employability rate which makes me feel really positive about what is to come. I will probably do my Masters in Exeter after getting advice from the Careers Team and I know what the steps of progression are for me which is great for peace of mind and it’s one more thing off my plate. "

"No course in the USA even came close to what Exeter had to offer…After all my offers came in, Exeter was the clear choice. Hitting the “confirm place” button on UCAS was a celebration for me. The team of international student helpers got me settled in and feeling welcome in no time.
Exeter gives you so many opportunities to do well in the working world. Career Zone sends out emails aplenty, and despite having only just started my professional writing career, I have submitted many poems to competitions - and won one. As a student ambassador, I have met so many incredible people and visited places I would not have been able to go otherwise, and I get to talk about my school, a place that I’m unashamed to say that I am so grateful for and deeply and truly love.
I fell in love with Exeter immediately. Not only were the people friendly, but they also completely supported my dream of becoming a writer without blinking - something I had never experienced…They treated me like I was capable of becoming a writer, of being an adult in the real world, despite my ‘oddness.’ I found kindred spirits in my peers and mentors in my professors, people who loved what I loved and wanted to discuss it."
