Access to Internships (A2I)

Due to COVID-19 we would ask you to consider carefully whether a role is remote working or in the workplace, both are possible under the Access to Internships (A2I) Scheme. If the role can only be undertaken in the office, we ask that you work with the intern to ensure they are following the COVID-19 safety guidelines and that Government COVID-19 policy is adhered to. The Internships Team are working remotely, working Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Please email A2I@exeter.ac.uk to contact us, as the office phone lines will not be answered. If your enquiry is urgent please highlight this in the subject bar of your email.

Students please visit our Student Facing Pages.

Access to Internships (A2I) is a fund to help employers offset the cost of hiring a University of Exeter student or graduate on a UK paid internship or graduate role. All interns must be employed by the internship organisation and paid through the organisations own payroll system. Students can be employed part-time during term time, or full-time during the vacations. Employers can receive more than one subsidy, to a maximum of two subsidies per year, across all A2I funding sources.

Student Widening Participation (WP) Funding:

We offer UK: Micro, SMEs, registered Charities, Statutory Organisations and internal University of Exeter employees, who have been approached by a student who meets the Widening Participation (WP) Criteria,‌ a subsidy to fully fund an intern for 140 hours. Eligible students are encouraged to speculatively approach organisations and apply from mid-September - June. Further information about these subsidies can be found here.

SW Business Funded Internships:

We offer businesses in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset (within a 25-mile radius of Exeter) the opportunity to recruit a fully funded virtual intern, for 70 hours.  These subsidies are normally available from the end of October and are issued as part of the ‘SW Business Funded’ campaign.

Santander Universities Employability Scheme:

We offer businesses in the UK the opportunity to recruit a fully funded virtual intern, for 70 hours. These subsidies are normally available from the end of January for businesses who recruit via the SBP scheme.

Eligible students are encouraged to approach organisations to arrange their own paid internship. If you have found a University of Exeter intern and would like to take advantage of the funding, please get in touch so we can verify what funding the student is eligible to draw down for your organisation and provide further information. You can get in touch with us by emailing A2I@exeter.ac.uk.

The Internships Team can advertise your student vacancy and graduate role to help you find the right candidate. When you place your vacancy to advert with the internship team, A2I may be able to reserve funding for you.

Due to the Equality Act 2010, we will not be able to reserve or advertise roles for organisations wishing to apply for the Widening Participation (WP) funding. Instead eligible students are encouraged to speculatively approach organisations to arrange their own paid internship. If however you have already appointed an intern, with the intern’s permission we will be able to check to see if they meet the funding criteria and potentially award funding to your organisation.

If you wish to advertise a vacancy please complete the Internship Vacancy Form and return it to internships@exeter.ac.uk. You will then be contacted by a member of the Internships Team to discuss the advertising and recruiting process.
