ESG Investing Roundtable

Exeter Student Investment Fund (ExSIF) in collaboration with the Exeter Sustainable Finance Centre (ESF)

As part of ExSIF's Financial Analysis Course, the society is teaming up with the Exeter Sustainable Finance Centre (ESF) and professionals in finance to discuss the most important questions surrounding ESG investing, in anticipation of COP26. They will be joined by 4 guests on the roundtable: Professor Chendi Zhang, Director of the Exeter Sustainable Finance Centre, Rajesh Tharyan, Senior Lecturer in Finance at the University of Exeter, Grace Chan, Asset Manager at Cero Generation and James Holt, Assistant Director at Brewin Dolphin. Environmental, Social and Governance issues are of increasing importance in investing and in financial services more generally. In this discussion we will be looking at the evolving role of ESG concerns in investment, stakeholders in ESG and the most pressing problems and solutions surrounding ESG in finance.

Format:
Adriel Cheung, Vice President at the Exeter Student Investment Fund, will lead an hour-long discussion
between the four guests on the Roundtable. Adriel will just be adding in questions and thoughts to provoke discussion between the guests, we hope that the conversation between guests will be as free-flowing as possible. This will be followed by a ~30 minute Q&A open to all audience members, where we hope student and visitors can gain extra insight on the areas discussed and any other ESG-related questions.

• What is your definition of ESG and what is its significance?
• What is the history of ESG and what are your thoughts on its progression?
• Who are the different stakeholders in ESG and what do you see their role is in the development?
• What are companies' typical internal ESG goals and what steps are taken to help achieve them?
• What is the impact of SFDR and how does this advance the COP 26 objectives?
• How can we improve sustainable and ESG evaluation of companies?
• What are some of the issues commonly found in sustainable investing?
• What steps need to be taken to improve the future of the renewable energy industry?
• How can the general public (retail investors) make a difference and what advice would you give?

The Exeter Student Investment Fund:
The Exeter Student Investment Fund is a student-led society at the univeristy of Exeter that was founded in 2020 with the aim to help students Learn, Network and Invest. The society runs speaker events every week at ExSIF and their Financial Analysis Course running throughout term 1 aims to equip members with knowledge of key concepts in finance and equity valuation. Alongside speaker events, throughout the year the society offers trading simulations, guest lectures, individual careers guidance and networking opportunities.

Exeter Sustainable Finance Centre (ESF)
The Exeter Sustainable Finance (ESF) Centre applies rigorous research to influence the practice of sustainable and responsible finance. It brings together students, faculty, alumni and partners for innovation and the sharing of ideas on finance and sustainability. The Centre offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses on sustainable finance and investments, corporate governance, and other finance topics. The ESF Centre is based at the University of Exeter Business School and is Directed by Professor Chendi Zhang.
