Title: Invoking the Holocaust in Relation to Contemporary Issues of Justice and Violence

Abstract: In recent decades, the Holocaust has popularly become a standard reference point for understanding the worst potentials of genocidal violence in a Western context. Holocaust education in schools and public commemorative events are now well entrenched in Britain, as in numerous other nations. This presentation explores the extent to which Holocaust remembrance organisations both invite us to draw ‘lessons’ for the present but also warn us off doing so in ways deemed inappropriate. I suggest that, in practice, this can lead to confusing and contentious situation in which the applicability of Holocaust memory to current issues of justice and violence exists in a liminal state.

Bio: David Tollerton is Associate Professor in Memory Studies at the University of Exeter. He is Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Holocaust and Genocide Studies. His last book, Holocaust Memory and Britain’s Religious-Secular Landscape, was published by Routledge in 2020. He is currently completing a book entitled Remembering and Forgetting Britain’s COVID-19 Pandemic for the same publisher.
