Rethinking Data and AI for Health - A seminar and panel discussion

The University of Exeter is delighted to welcome Dr. Jess Morley, a leading voice in digital ethics and health data policy.

Event details

Now based at the Yale Digital Ethics Center, Jess was previously at the University of Oxford, and was lead researcher for the UK Government’s landmark review “Better, Broader, Safer”. Her work continues to shape national and international conversations around the responsible use of health data.

In her seminar, Jess will discuss approaches to how data-driven technologies, including AI, can be safely and effectively implemented in healthcare systems.

Following her talk, there will be a panel discussion with Dr Morley, chaired by Professor Andrew Howes (Head of Computer Science), and including Dr Nick Kennedy (RDUH Chief Research Information Officer, BRC Senior Investigator Fellow and HRC co-theme lead for data and AI), Dr Fabrizio Costa (Computer Science) and Amanda (patient representative).

Dr. Morley is known for her clear-eyed approach to digital transformation—balancing her personal conviction for innovation with a deep understanding of the complex realities of healthcare systems like the NHS. She challenges the hype around AI, advocating instead for careful implementation that prioritises safety, equity, transparency, and long-term impact.

Dr Morley's visit is generously supported by the EPSRC Hub for Quantitative Modelling in Healthcare, and the seminar is jointly hosted with the NIHR Exeter Biomedical Research Centre, Institute for Data Science and AI, and NIHR Exeter HealthTech Research Centre.
