Toby Craig Jones - The USS Vincennes Shooting of Iran Air Flight 655

Oil and war were central to late 20th century American empire in the Middle East. Toby C. Jones's current work explores the history their entanglement. Jones will discuss the United States’ entry into the Iran-Iraq war, its militarization of the Persian Gulf, the political economy that drove it, and narrates the origin story for how and why the United States would come to wage a forever war in the region. He approaches this violent imperial past through the story of the United States’ shooting down of an Iranian passenger jet in 1988 and the historical forces that led to it.
