Dr Michael Bastedo, Professor of Education and Associate Den, University of Michigan

As part of the School of Education Lecture Series we’re excited to invite you to an upcoming hybrid seminar hosted by the Centre for Social Mobility in the School of Education; ‘Rethinking Contextualization Tools in Holistic Admissions’.

Event details

This session lead by Michael Bastedo, the Marvin W. Peterson Collegiate Professor and Associate Dean, Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education, University of Michigan. His scholarly interests are in higher education decision making, particularly college admissions, stratification, rankings, and governance.  He is the founding director of the Michigan Admissions Collaboratory, a practice-to-research center designed to facilitate and promote college admissions research both in the U.S. and internationally.  In 2023, he was elected to the National Academy of Education.  His recent research, funded by The National Science Foundation, has been reported by journalists at National Public Radio, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Slate, and The Chronicle of Higher Education, among others.

Holistic admissions has been used in various forms in the U.S. for over 20 years, but there are intersecting issues with cognitive bias and data that need to be addressed.  In this presentation, Michael will discuss how holistic admissions works in the U.S., his experimental work on cognitive bias in the admissions process, new contextualization data tools that have been developed from this research, and new data on the equity impacts of these tools.  He will also discuss how holistic admissions is diffusing on a global scale, and common drivers and issues across country contexts.

If joining us in person arrival refreshments will be available from 10.00am
