Classics and Ancient History Research Seminar - Pepe Romanillos

‘Human geography, classics and ancient geographical thought’

Pepe Romanillos (Geography): ‘Human geography, classics and ancient geographical thought’

Event details

Abstract

This seminar will explore the interdisciplinary space between human geography and classics (from the perspective of a geographer!). The history of this interdisciplinary space involves periods of significant collaboration - but for various disciplinary reasons, it is also a broader story of disengagement and forgetting on the part of contemporary geographers. After outlining this disciplinary landscape, the seminar introduces themes from my forthcoming monograph, Speculative Earth: Geophilosophy and Ancient Geographical Thought. The book represents a geographical attempt to re-engage with ancient geographical writings (and classical studies more broadly) to reconsider ancient understandings of earth and to challenge some of the disciplinary narratives (and methodologies) surrounding ancient/modern geographical thought.

Please find your invite to Pepe Romanillos at our Classics and Ancient History Research Seminar in Harrison 209, with the option to join remotely at the Teams link below, where Pepe will talk about ‘Human geography, classics and ancient geographical thought’.
