The New Age of Genocide: Intellectual and Political Challenges after Gaza

Book Talk with Martin Shaw

The European Centre for Palestine Studies is pleased to welcome Martin Shaw for the launch of his new book.

Event details

Martin Shaw was one of the first genocide scholars to recognise Israel's campaign in Gaza as genocide, in October 2023, and before that to discuss the Nakba in a genocide frame. He will be talking about both issues, which are extensively discussed in his new book, and will argue that US and wider Western involvement in Israel's destruction of Gaza have decisively altered the wider politics of genocide in today's world.

Martin is a historical sociologist who has written widely on genocide, war and global politics; his books include What is Genocide?, War and Genocide, and Genocide and International Relations. He is Emeritus Professor of International Relations and Politics at the University of Sussex and Research Professor at the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals. His most widely-read article on Gaza is "The Genocide that Changed the World", Journal of Genocide Research, 2025 (open access).
