Event details
What constitutes people’s identities, and how can we investigate them? Personal and social identities are fundamental topics of investigation across the social sciences and philosophy. These topics raise complex questions about the role of mind, experience, and social relationships in everyday lives, as well as about the biological-social divide. Philosophers and social scientists approach questions using a wide-array of methods, from armchair “thought-experiments” to ethnographies. In this panel discussion, we take different disciplinary perspectives to reflect on the experiential, social, and other dimensions that shape personal and social identities.
To that effect, our panel is composed of Giovanna Colombetti (philosophy of affectivity, emotions, and cognitive sciences), and Katharine Tyler (social anthropology, critical race, ethnicity, and migration studies). The panel is organized and moderated by Celso Neto (philosophy) and Astrid Schrader (STS). The event embodies the interdisciplinary ethos of Egenis, celebrating disciplinary diversity within and beyond our centre.
