Impact Investing Types

We survey 205 managers of impact funds in private markets on their goals, organizational structure, positioning, and investment processes. We show that impact funds can be categorized into three distinct groups: impact-first, finance-first, and collinear funds. There are meaningful differences across these groups in terms of positioning, fundraising, and investment processes. We argue these differences matter for evaluating and improving the impact investing space.
