Entry requirements

The information below will allow you to check qualifications from your country or territory to see if they may be accepted for entry to the University of Exeter, and the equivalent grades required. Our course pages contain typical entry requirements that are commonly held by UK applicants. You can find out details on our English language requirements here.

Undergraduate entry requirements for students from Japan

Students must have completed an appropriate foundation course, such as one of our International Study Centre International Foundation courses at Exeter's Streatham Campus, or equivalent.

It may be possible to consider applicants with the two-year associate degrees (Jun-Gakushi) or the vocational degree (senmonshi).

Postgraduate entry requirements for students from Japan

Postgraduate Taught

Applicants will require a degree (Gakushi) from a recognised Japanese university with grades ranging from 60–100%.

First Degree Bachelors Degree
First Grade A or 80% minimum or GPA 3.5 out of 4.0. (Grade S is 90%+)
2:1 Grade B or 75%-79% or GPA 3.0 out of 4.0
2:2 Grade B or 70%-74% or GPA 2.5 out of 4.0

Postgraduate Research

Applicants will require a Masters (Shushi) with grades ranging from 70%+ or B.

Agent representatives

The University of Exeter has agreements with independent representatives in your country, who would be pleased to tell you more about the University's programmes and assist you in making an application. Most of our representatives offer their services to applicants for free. Those that do charge a fee must make this clear from the outset of their consultation with students and issue appropriate receipts. Scholarships and funding opportunities

We are investing over £7m in a range of scholarships to support international and EU students paying international tuition fees, who choose Exeter for their studies in 2026/27. This includes the Exeter Excellence Scholarship, recognising outstanding academic achievement and support students from around the world to take their place in our vibrant, global community.

University of Exeter Postgraduate Taught Scholarships for Japan

These scholarships help make sure aspiring students from this country can pursue their studies. There are scholarships available for January 2026 entry and September 2026 entry.
